Back in 1973, a small three chair barbershop came up for sale in Rockford. A car title had to be used for collateral to raise the money to buy that shop. Thirty three years later, that small shop has
turned into five hair salons with over sixty employees.
The success of that business was based on a simple concept. If you give good, quick service at a reasonable price, people will come. And come they did. So much so that their original shop at 603 Hollister Ave. had to move across the street to 617 S. Rockford Ave. March 19, 1984.
In August of 1985, a second shop opened on the other side of town at North Towne Mall. It also did so well it had to move to its current location at the mall with twenty stations, a play area for children, and a huge selection of hair care products. In May of 1989, a third location was added in Belvidere. The next location opened January 1992 on 11th Street, Rockford. And the fifth, and latest addition, was in April 2001 in Roscoe. Besides all of the regular salon services offered, each shop carries special products such as American Crew, Paul Mitchell, Matrix, Nexxus and Redkin.
A lot has changed in thirty three years. Dukes & Lords progressed from being a small barbershop catering to men to the salons it is today, catering to men, women, teenagers and children. Family Haircutting Center was added to the familiar Dukes & Lords name so that the name would finally fit the business.
D&L Family Haircutting Center has been a pioneer in the way local hair salons have done business over the years. Their goals for the future include serving customers with the best possible service, staying competitive and of course, more locations.
